The Holmes

The Holmes is an area of ancient, rich, fertile grazing land.

The Holmes are over 200 hectares of open riverside meadows that since the 18th century have been divided into 'gaits' for traditional grazing.

Here grazing rights are divided into 446 shares known as gaits which are owned by a number of organisations and individuals.

These gaits are auctioned in March of each year to farmers and graziers for a period of 7 months after which they are cleared of cattle and sheep in order to rest the pasture for the following year.
